The "Beat Generation" that emerged after World War II and reached its zenith in the 1960s represented an era of new perspectives. The questioning, anti-establishment view of the world prevalent among the various members of the Beat Movement found its voice in both novels and poetry. The novels especially, or what might be called underground narratives, were a driving force within the literary and social and cultural revolution that characterized the Beats. This study of the American novel during that era presents the forerunners of the literary tradition of the Beats and examines the major genres of the Beat novel: the juvenile delinquent novel, the self-discovering novel of individuality, the gay novel, the drug novel, the new journalism, and novels taking on topics of defiance and submission.
Industry Regulation and the Performance of the American Economy by Paul W. MacAvoy, ISBN 0393961869
Regulation reached its zenith in the 1960s. The 1980s was the decade of deregulation. The 1990s afford us an important opportunity to assess what is left of regulation and its impact on the economy. And who better to do this than Paul W. MacAvoy, one of America's most respected experts on the economics of industry? Beginning with the Act to Regulate Commerce of 1887, Professor MacAvoy traces the rise of regulation over one hundred years to its sharp curtailment in the 1980s. Originally invoked as a means of controlling the prices set by monopolies, this policy tool found extended use in the last quarter-century to do everything from keeping down energy prices to protecting the health and safety of workers and the quality of the environment. Foucault and the Iranian Revolution: Gender and the Seductions of Islamism
Philosopher Michel Foucault was working as a special correspondent for "Corriere della Sera and "Le Nouvel Observateur in 1978 when the protests against the shah of Iran reached their zenith. During this little-known stint as a journalist, Foucault traveled to Iran, met with leaders like Ayatollah Khomeini, and wrote a series of articles on the revolution." Foucault and the Iranian Revolution is the first book-length analysis of these essays on Iran, the majority of which have never before appeared in English. These provocative writings, included here in their entirety as annotated translations, are essential for understanding the history and the future of the West's relationship with Iran and, more generally, to political Islam.

England in 1819: The Politics of Literary Culture and the Case of Romantic Historicism by James Chandler, ISBN 0226101088
In 1819, writers Keats, Shelley, and Wordsworth produced their most acclaimed work, and the craze for Walter Scott's historical novels reached a zenith. Here James Chandler shows how literature engaged the volatile politics of the day and became, in effect, history writing itself. To demonstrate his point, Chandler offers a series of cases of his own built around key texts from the era. Photos.
